Syrian Hamster

The Syrian Hamster or Golden Hamster is probably the most popular species of hamster and can be found in nearly every pet store. Like the name of the species suggests, Syrian Hamsters come from Syria, where they still can be found in the wild, though they are endangered now.

Golden Hamsters grow about 5 to 7 inches in length and they have a very short tail. Their life usually lasts for 2 to 3 years. Syrian Hamsters have expandable cheekpouches which they use to collect and carry food and bedding. A Syrian Hamster can carry up to half its body weight in grain in its cheekpouches.

The Syrian Hamster is a solitary and notoriously territorial animal. That means that they need to be housed individually because otherwise they will start to fight and try to kill each other. Golden Hamsters are nocturnal, so they usually wake up during the evening and stay awake through the night.
