Hamsters as petsHamsters are widely considered as one of the most popular pets around the globe and you can find them in nearly every pet store. Many people like hamsters as pets because of their docile, inquisitive natures, their small size and their ease of care. Often people who don't like rats or mice do like hamsters, though, because they don't have a long tail and look more like guinea pigs.
Hamsters are often considered as one of the best pets for young kids. But generally speaking that's a myth. In fact, hamsters do have some attributes that don't make them the ideal pets for young kids. Hamsters are nocturnal, which means that they sleep during the day (when the kids are awake) and wake up during the evening (when the kids sleep). Also, hamsters are commonly loners and don't always become tame. They have powerful jaws and are not afraid to bite if they are mishandled. So kids should be supervised when handling hamsters.
